Nelson H. White

Oil on canvas board, 16 x 24 inches, 2010. Nelson Holbrook White is the grandson of Lyme Art Colony artist Henry Cooke White. Inspired and instructed by his father and grandfather, Nelson decided to devote himself to painting. In 1955 he traveled to Florence, Italy, where he studied with famed painters Pietro Annigoni and Nerina Simi. He continues to work in the United States, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Russia. Nelson has exhibited his work throughout the world and is represented in numerous private and public collections.

Crayon on paper, 12 x 9 inches, circa 1916. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, James Daugherty became one of the early exponents of American abstract painting, focusing on the exploration of color and design. He studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia. Inspired by the Fauvist movement and the Synchromist movement, Daugherty’s signature painting style involved arrangements of highly complex color segments. The artist was also a prolific illustrator, completing more than 50 book commissions.

Oil on canvas, 8 x 12 inches, circa 1890. Born in Oswego, New York, John Francis Murphy became one of the premier American Tonalist painters. Inspired by Thomas Cole, he composed landscapes with a poetic delicacy and an appreciation for nature’s serene charm. He loved the New York countryside and was particularly inclined to paint intimate vignettes of fall meadows. A leading figure within the Barbizon movement, his works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Montclair Art Museum.

Oil on board, 6 1/2 x 9 3/8 inches. Everett Longley Warner was a painter, teacher, lecturer, and writer. His early studies included the Arts Students League in New York and the Julian Academy in Paris. In 1909, he began his association with the Lyme Art Colony. In 1924, he took a teaching post at Carnegie Institute of Technology, retiring in 1945 and moving to New Hampshire where he continued to paint in his later years.

A past president of the Society of Illustrators, Steven was an illustrator for 25 years. His paintings have appeared on the covers of books by Isaac Asimov, Clive Cussler, and Stephen King.

Sewell Sillman (1924-1992)

Watercolor, 18 x 24 inches. Influential twentieth-century artist and longtime Lyme resident Sewell Sillman became a protégé of the Bauhaus Master Josef Albers at Black Mountain College, a hotbed of avant-garde activity in America. Sillman absorbed Albers’ approach to color, design, drawing, and education over the decades of their work together, bringing Albers’ lessons to bear in his own art and teaching. His foray into watercolor set him off on experiments in gradation, measurement, geometry, and scale. The Museum exhibited the artist’s work earlier this year during Sewell Sillman: Pushing Limits, February 13 - April 18, 2010.

Fidelia Bridges was a 19th-century artist whose exquisite studies of birds and plants painted in watercolor and gouache have enchanted viewers ever since. Through these simple inspiring images, the artist has gained devoted recognition. Fidelia studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and became an associate member of the National Academy in 1875. Her work is represented in the Florence Griswold Museum’s collection.

Oil on masonite, 7 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. Michael Theise is a master of trompe l’oeil (fool the eye) painting. He is a graduate of the Paier College of Art and is considered a protégé of Ken Davies. Though reminiscent of the art of 19th century painters like Peto and Harnett, Michael developed his own style, choosing unique subject matter. He is represented in many prestigious collections and galleries, including Vose Galleries in Boston and The Cooley Gallery in Old Lyme. In 2008, the artist was honored with a solo exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art.

His work has been seen internationally since the late 1960’s and is in the permanent collections of major museums, both in the United States and aboard. This special piece was designed by the artist and produced by Ceramica of Chester, Connecticut.

One-of-a-kind, hand-carved sculpture of a marbled godwit bird preening by artist Dale Callaway. Made of white cedar and painted in oils, 16 inches tall. Dale’s interest in carving began in her childhood, carving dolls and making pine model boats. Her many interests led her to the Museum School in Boston where she went on to open a silversmithing shop. In spite of all her occupations, she has always returned to carving, loving the old decoys. The artist currently resides in East Lyme, Connecticut.

Fused glass mosaic vase handcrafted by artist Jeffrey P’an of Presceint Studios in Stonington, 10 1/2 inches tall. Limited edition piece 1/60, first of its series. P’an begins his creations by fusing together strips of various colored glass and then attaching them to the blowpipe. The entire core is dipped in molten glass and worked into shape. The fusing process leaves a ribbed texture that refracts light passing through.
