No reservations required
Drop into the Hartman Education Center and pick up all the supplies you need to make a painting on the grounds of theMuseum. Painters are given brushes, palette, paint, canvas, and a smock and are sent to paint down by the river or in Miss Florence's garden. All ages and skill levels welcome. There are also hands-on art projects, books, games and puzzles to enjoy. A great way to spend the day. Program continues every Sunday through October.

Connecticut Landmarks presents the award-winning 2010 Collectors & Explorers Lecture Series, The Inspired Landscape, beginning Tuesday, April 6 through Thursday, April 29th. This year’s series consists of four lectures presented at two locations over four weeks: Tuesday, April 6, 13, 20, 27 at 5:30 pm at the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, and on Thursday, April 8, 15, 22, 29 at 2:00 pm at the Florence Griswold Museum. Co-sponsored by Connecticut Forest & Park Association, this year’s presenters include: environmental attorney, activist and author Russell Brenneman; Visiting Wesleyan University Scholar, geologist and author Peter LeTourneau, Ph.D; Connecticut landscape artist Jan Blencowe; and essayist and poet David Leff.
Since 1997, the Collectors & Explorers Lecture Series has covered a variety of Connecticut topics including architecture, artifacts, statuary, gardens, significant landmarks and notable persons. Presented by top-tier historians, scholars, authors and artists, this year’s series will focus on the abundant history right under our feet.
Admission for each lecture is $15 or $12 for members of Connecticut Landmarks, Connecticut Forest & Park Association, Connecticut Historical Society and the Florence Griswold Museum. Whether you doodle, scribble, or sketch, the art of drawing is about expressing thoughts and feelings in line and shade. Draw On! is a weeklong community festival that brings together people of all ages through the simple act of drawing. The objective of Draw On! @ F.G.M. is to inspire people of all ages and abilities to just start drawing.
During the Draw On! @ F.G.M. celebration, visitors can explore the world of drawing through a series of “creation stations” that offer drawing instruction and encourage experimentation with a variety of materials, techniques, and styles. Read more...

Art + Design Labs for Adults
Experience the art lesson “problems” that Sewell Sillman practiced under esteemed teachers such as Josef Albers and later taught at Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Black Mountain College, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Test out color optics, intriguing drawing exercises, and time-based creative activities. Explore the brain-teasing drawing exercises that enhance motor skills and eye-hand coordination. This week, recreate some of Sillman's exercises in making “fast” and “slow” lines and learn how you can paint time into watercolor.

Handmade in Connecticut: Springtime Artisan Event
The Museum’s shop will expand into Marshfield House for this one-day event that will feature handmade art and crafts from some of Connecticut’s finest artisans. Ceramics, jewelry, and small works of art will be for sale, perfectly timed for Mother’s Day.
