Fully Awake: Black Mountain College

Join documentary filmmaker, Cathryn Zommer for an introduction and screening of her film Fully Awake: Black Mountain College (2008), a new documentary film about the experimental college based in North Carolina from 1933 to 1957. Artists such as Sewell Sillman, Josef Albers, Buckminster Fuller, Robert Rauschenburg, and others, were impacted by the experimental and creative nature of the school. During its short existence the school significantly affected the American art scene, creating revolutionary new modes of music, literature, theater, and the visual arts. View Trailer

Art + Design Labs for Adults
Experience the art lesson “problems” that Sewell Sillman practiced under esteemed teachers such as Josef Albers and later taught at Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Black Mountain College, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Test out color optics, intriguing drawing exercises, and time-based creative activities. Explore the brain-teasing drawing exercises that enhance motor skills and eye-hand coordination. This week, learn to write with both hands at once and create optical illusions with simple lines.

Join artist and former professor of physics David Madasci for an illustrated lecture about art inspired by the nighttime sky. To honor the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of the telescope (2009), Madasci’s presentation features stunning artwork from the 17th century to the present that shows man’s creative musings about the mysterious and majestic heavens above.

Connecticut's geologic diversity has played an important role in our state's history. Based on his new book, de Boer will share his research in an illustrated lecture to reveal the physical landscape of Connecticut and its impact on the cultural and economic history of the region. Whether you doodle, scribble, or sketch, the art of drawing is about expressing thoughts and feelings in line and shade. Draw On! is a weeklong community festival that brings together people of all ages through the simple act of drawing. The objective of Draw On! @ F.G.M. is to inspire people of all ages and abilities to just start drawing.
During the Draw On! @ F.G.M. celebration, visitors can explore the world of drawing through a series of “creation stations” that offer drawing instruction and encourage experimentation with a variety of materials, techniques, and styles. Read more...

Tell + Show Gallery Discussions (for adults) with Amanda C. Burdan, Curatorial Fellow
Transforming the galleries into learning laboratories, Burdan both tells about Sillman’s distinct approach to color, line, and time with the work on exhibit as well as shows, using hands-on examples of Sillman’s creative lessons and artistic practices. This week, consider the ways in which Sillman marks time in his drawings and paintings.

The Museum’s shop will expand into Marshfield House for this one-day event that will feature handmade art and crafts from some of Connecticut’s finest artisans. Ceramics, jewelry, and small works of art will be for sale, perfectly timed for Mother’s Day.
