The French Impressionists are renowned for being the painters of modern
life, but well over a century after the movement began it is sometimes difficult for us to understand just how radically modern their world was. This course goes beyond the frame of the Impressionists’ masterworks to investigate the historical and social contexts that shaped the artists’ lives and work. Lectures explore the “modern” issues such as the building boom in Paris, the development of photography, and the political turmoil of the day. We will reorient ourselves to a 19th-century point of view attempting to see these well-known paintings with fresh eyes.
Note: Save Friday, April 30 for make-up snow day.
