Scarecrows at the Museum:
A Harvestime Adventure *


For the month of October, the museum hosts a gathering of over two dozen artisitic scarecrows on its grounds. Each scarecrow is based on a famous artist or well-known artwork. These one-of-a-kind works of art, created by artists, designers, and landscapers, will delight visitors of all ages. So, while you visit the Florence Griswold Museum, you will also encounter the likenesses of Henri Matisse, Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo and many more! Visitors tour the grounds with a map that features information about each creation.

Hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. The Museum will be open on Columbus Day, Monday, October 11.
(Please note that the Sunday extended hours are for October only; normal Sunday hours are 1-5pm.)

Admission: $14 for adults, $13 for seniors, $12 for students, and FREE to children 12 and under. $5 for members. (This includes admission to the Grounds, Florence Griswold House, Chadwick Studio, Landscape Center and Krieble Gallery featuring the special exhibition With Needle and Brush: Schoolgirl Embroidery from the Connecticut River Valley.)

Check back for details about special activities including hands-on art-making Sundays, puppet shows, scavenger hunts, pumpkin decorating contests, a Halloween party with costume parade, and more. Not-So-Very-Scary Nighttime tours feature talking scarecrows and the quest to find the scarecrow with the hidden harvestime treasure!

Harvestime Film Night: The Curse of Micah Rood

Based on a 18th-century legend from Norwich, CT, Micah Rood is a recluse who cherishes his privacy and his precious apple orchard. When a wily peddler stays the night, Rood accuses him of stealing his apples and commits a violent deed that soon taints the fruit of his orchard with the blood of guilt. Come and meet the filmmaker Alec Asten before screening this award-winning film. Orchard fresh apples from Haywood Farms in New Hartford will set the stage for delectable cocktails and seasonal treats. Timed Tours Beginning at 6pm
A Theatrical Exploration of Scarecrows at the Museum
$20 per person (members $15), $15 for children (up to 18)
Tour the Scarecrows at the Museum at night in small groups to solve the mystery of the spellbound scarecrow. Aided by lanterns and flashlights participants will be led through the grounds on a harvestime quest. A night of dark thrills and fun scarecrow antics for all! Flashlights recommended.

Heirloom Apple Day

Meet apple farmer Peter Haywood of Haywood Farms in New Hartford, to learn about all things apples! See the variety of apples grown in Connecticut and taste fresh cider from the apples of his orchards.

Gallery Open House

Historic Needlework Day at the Huber’s Gallery in Old Saybrook
Join Carol and Stephen Huber at their esteemed gallery of antique needlework located at 40 Ferry Road in Old Saybrook for an afternoon filled with historic samplers, memorials, and canvas-work pictures. Displayed throughout a remarkable house, built in 1649 as the munitions store for Fort Saybrook, the charming architectural details and antique furnishings set the stage for their dramatic display of stunning 17th, 18th, and 19th-century needlework.

Teddy Bear Tea Party

Share the enchantment of the Scarecrow event with your little ones at this Wizard of Oz themed tea party. Come enjoy edible haystacks, a scarecrow story, and a short walk to see some of the scarecrows. Wizard of Oz costumes or scarecrow attire encouraged.

The Hubers, the foremost dealers of antique samplers, present an insightful illustrated history of schoolgirl needlework. Attendees are invited to bring along a single work of needlework for post-lecture identification and discussion. A light reception will precede the event.

Join Diane Smith, a veteran television and radio reporter, for a lively introduction to her newest publication Seasons of Connecticut, a beautiful celebration of the Nutmeg state. She will sign copies of her book afterwards in the Museum Shop.

Halloween Party and Costume Parade

Included with Museum Admission The party lasts all day in the Hartman Education Center with yummy treats and fun hands-on crafts. Be a part of our Halloween Costume parade and march through the Scarecrows at the Museum event. The parade will begin at 11am. Costume prizes awarded for Best Scarecrow, Very Very Scary, and Laugh-Out-Loud Funny. Candy, cider and doughnuts for all!
